Fears and Phobias

Fear has been around as long as the species and does serve a purpose, that of protecting us.  Indeed, our ancestors found it very valuable in surviving.

However, our society has evolved and that part of us that protects us has caused a kind of overflow.  It has created the fear emotion in many areas of our lives instead of just the "fight or flight" survival mechanism.

The origin of a phobia is usually associated with the extreme emotions caused by a traumatic anxiety event from early life. For instance, fear of flying may have been started by an initial event where the child was perhaps trapped in an enclosed space and although he recovered from the event quite quickly his subconscious mind locked this memory away for possible reference in the future.

Later in life when that person is perhaps under pressure and anxiety levels are high he may find himself in the ‘enclosed space’ of an airplane in terrible weather. The subconscious mind, noting high anxiety, steps in with a programmed panic behavior response from the childhood event. This is because the subconscious mind needs to find the nearest matching experience in order to know how to behave. This fear then finds a focus on the flight itself and thus the phobia is born which escalates in severity every time he attempts to fly.  When any fear becomes a phobia it can be extremely debilitating and restricting many areas of life.

What's the Difference?

Generally speaking, fear is rational and when it becomes irrational it changes into a phobia.  It's a subjective call mainly because it's one of degree.  The easiest way to determine what you might have is to judge if it's more irrational than rational or not.  Every fear uses our imagination which is powerful and therefore always have some amount of irrationality.

The Solution

Some fears can be released by just finding the cause of the problem, (the initial trauma), and releasing it.  We use several techniques that will desensitize you to the fear response.  Essentially we will use a very fast yet comprehensive method that will "re-wire" your mind to enable you to create a new positive response to your fear situations.  Then we can go ahead and create a replacement response to that old fear trigger.  An Anchor point (this can be physical, visual or auditory) will be created for you so that when triggered by you, will induce a calm and peaceful feeling at any time or any place.  The triggering of this Anchor point will remind your body that it should conform to the new responses we will be creating while in hypnosis.  You will also be taught self hypnosis to reinforce the calm peaceful feeling whenever you desire.   A unique plan of therapy is created for each client.

The general elements included are:

  • Initially, Hypnosis is used to access the subconscious mind, (where response patterns reside), and facilitate deep relaxation thereby reducing levels of anxiety.

  • Next the original trauma is accessed via hypnosis and using specific techniques the subconscious mind is desensitized to it. In other words, the emotion is taken out of the experience.

  • Finally, we can re-program the individual’s subconscious to be totally unaffected by the particular object of fear so that he/she will be unaffected by it in the future.  This utilizes a concept called "anchoring" and allows you on the spot relief.
