Hypnotherapy and Hypnosis
Changing Lives!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind that we all, unknowingly , experience every day. It can best be described as a focus or concentration on a single train of thought or action. We will un-knowingly enter a state of hypnosis whilst reading a really engrossing book, watching TV, or when we are engrossed in performing a task or skill such as driving, playing an instrument, painting, playing a sport (this hypnotized state will often be referred to as being ‘in the zone’).

Can anyone be hypnotized?

The vast majority of people can be hypnotized!  In fact, it's such a natural state that we tend to have several trance states a day.  People who have various types of brain damage may not be hypnotizable though.  The key is having a willingness on the part of the individual.

How does hypnosis feel?

Hypnosis feels different for everybody, and there is no specific feeling associated with it. Most people describe feelings of relaxation, a sense of heightened awareness, and sometimes a heaviness or lightness in the arms and legs, but without exception hypnosis is always enjoyed. During hypnosis, the client remains aware at all times and is able to hear and respond to the therapist throughout the session.

Can you get stuck in hypnosis?

No. Hypnosis cannot make you do anything you don’t want to do, and contrary to popular hype, it is not a form of control, so consequently you retain the ability to break the trance state any time you wish.

Are there any side effects?

PLENTY, and all great!!! On it’s own, hypnosis is known to improve memory, enhance creativity and imagination, and of course induce relaxation. You will find that you begin to take more and more control of your life and positive things just start happening to you. It must be co-incidence!

Is hypnotherapy safe?

What can hypnotherapy help with?

Hypnotherapy is one of the most effective ways to quit smoking. Hypnosis is now recognized as a way of controlling chronic pain and is being used in operating theatres and dentist practices to induce anesthesia. Hypnotherapy has also long been recognized as a potent tool for facilitating change and combined with other therapies has had a tremendous affect on addictions.

What is NLP?

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a model of communication that focuses on identifying and using patterns of thought that influence a person's behavior as a means of improving the quality and effectiveness of their lives. It offers a paradigm of how the brain works (neuro), about how language interacts with the brain (linguistic), and how we use this interaction to get the results we want for ourselves and others (programming). It is an effective, proven vehicle for accelerated human change, radically altering the "old way" of lengthy psychotherapy.

It was created by Dr. John Grinder and Dr. Richard Bandler. Together they produced a linguistic model that identified the language patterns of a few gifted individuals such as Hypnotherapist Milton Erickson, MD., Fritz Perls of Gestalt therapy, anthropologist Gregory Bateson and Virginia Satir of family systems therapy. The combination of their research resulted in the technology known as Neuro Linguistic Programming. In the 20+ years since it was first developed, NLP has grown, changed and expanded, and it continues to do so today.

What is coaching?

Coaching is a formalized means of one person helping another to achieve their hopes and dreams, and to fulfill their potential. Many of us spend too much time existing, and not enough living. We often find it difficult to know how to get where we want to go, and even to know where we want to go. Coaching can help.

A coach assists you in gaining clarity (if you need it) towards your goals. What do you truly value in life? What and who do you truly want to be? From this point, your coach will guide you, support you and motivate you in your journey towards meeting your goals.

Goals can vary: Home, Family, Career, Finance, Friends, Activities...

Goals can be big or small, vague or distinct.  Whatever you bring with you, a coach will help you with.  You will never be told what your goals should be!

What are the success rates?

I do not believe it is ethical to give hard percentages of success.  Many professionals do claim a certain industry wide success percentage for one treatment or another.  However, these claims should be treated cautiously since they are virtually impossible to prove.  You can rest assured that any statement we make regarding potential success will always be based upon our own experience with clients.  Call to ask for an estimate of the number of sessions for your issue(s).  I will always do my utmost to help you to achieve your goals in a timely and ethical way.
